Yoga and the Rolling Stones

Lets get it clear from the outset that I love the Rolling Stones and have done since my teens. Over the years as I progressed further into my yoga journey I was pleasantly surprised how often the Rolling Stones had a link to and relevance to yoga.

The yama in the lyrics

I guess the first time I started to notice this was in the lyrics to ‘You Can’t Always Get What You Want’. In the first limb of Yoga, the Yamas (codes of self restraint), there is non-greed, aparigraha. The lyric “You can’t always get what you want, but if you try some time, you just might find, you get what you need,” pretty much sums up aparigraha. If we are greedy and allow ourselves to be overcome with desire and wants then we will not sit in a happy contended place in our lives. But if you try sometime, you just might find that you have got everything you need.

Through yoga we can observe our desires and wants and begin to see with greater clarity which are “wants” and which are “needs”. It doesn’t mean that we no longer have “wants” but it allow us to contextualise these wants and not allow them to dictate our happiness. Being mindful and living in the present moment. The Zen of the Rolling Stones!

The tongue and lips logo

The next yoga coincidence occurred when I visited Exhibitionism at the Saatchi gallery in London to see all of the Stones memorabilia. There was an exhibit about the famous tongue and lips logo and how it came about. Mick had seen the lips on a picture of the Goddess Kali. See below;

Goddess Kali features in the both the Vedas and the Upanishads which are ancient yogic and Hindu texts. Clearly Mick has had an interest in this area since the sixties.

Mick Jagger and Yoga

Mick has stated a number of times in recent years that he includes Yoga in his workout regime. He has also been in the press this year talking about his new found love of aerial yoga!

Having a dig around on the internet I found a picture of Mick in Sarvangasana (Shoulder Stand Pose) from back in the early 70’s;

And another of him in a variation of Shoulder Stand;

A further pic of Mick and Ronnie in Vrksasana (Tree Pose);

There is also a video of Mick warming up for a tour and he does some of the same warm-ups that we teach in our classes;

So basically, Mick Jagger does Yoga, he is 74 and in amazingly good health! So do Yoga like Mick! Get the moves like Jagger….

Keith Richards and Yoga?

And lets not forget about Keith who is looking like he has reached Samadhi in a seated yoga pose with a glass of bourbon;

Yeah man! Yoga and the Rolling Stones!

Namaste x

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week. The the This week is Mental Health Awareness Week. The theme for this year is anxiety.

Anxiety is something we can all experience from time to time to varying degrees. Thankfully there are many things we can do to help us manage our feelings of anxiety

Yoga is proven to help manage anxiety in a number of ways. Using mindfulness in our movements (noticing what physical sensations we feel) can help us take our focus from our wandering mind and instead focus on the present. So often in our day to day life we’re busy ‘doing’, whereas practising yoga in this way allows us to just be. Simply moving and stretching the body can help us when we have anxiety.

Breathing practices can be really useful too. They allow us to practise mindfulness and they also allow us to take deeper and slower breaths which can help us feel calmer.

Why not take a moment now and watch your breath if it feels comfortable to? Notice the movement in your body as you breathe. When you notice your mind wander, gently bring your focus back to your breath. It doesn’t have to be a long practice - even a short practice can make a big difference. Taking a moment to just be.

Of course there are lots of other ways we can help manage anxiety. The Mental Health Foundation @mentalhealthfoundation has a wealth of information about anxiety and tips to help you manage anxiety:

Do you find yoga and breathing practices help you? We’d love to hear from your thoughts.

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week. The the This week is Mental Health Awareness Week. The theme for this year is anxiety.

A report by the Mental Health Foundation found that 73% of UK adults had felt anxious at least some of the time in the past two weeks. I include myself in that percentage!

All this week we’ll be talking about anxiety and the things that we can do to help.

Anxiety is a feeling of unease, worry or apprehension. It can show up in our body (physical), in our thoughts (mental) and in how we feel (emotional).

We’ve both experienced anxiety. I used to think I had to ‘shake it off’ or get rid of it before I could do the things I wanted to do in my life.

Mindfulness has taught me that I don’t need to push these feelings/thoughts away - instead I’ve learnt (and continue to learn) ways in which to help myself manage my anxiety levels and live better with anxiety when it is present. Things that help me include mindfulness practices, yoga and breathing practices (of course!), walks, being in nature, gardening, music, spending time with loved ones..the list goes on

The Mental Health Foundation @mentalhealthfoundation has a wealth of information about anxiety and tips to help you manage anxiety:

What do you do that helps with anxiety? We’d love to hear your tips about what helps you!
